For close to a decade, I’ve been in learning and development in mid-to-large sized corporations. I’ve managed learning projects, analyzed performance needs, created and implemented learning strategies, and developed training and curriculums. My primary area of expertise is instructional design.
What is Instructional Design?
When a company needs to teach its workforce things like how to sell a product, how to interact with customers, or how to manage teams effectively for instance, I partner with business leaders to identify who needs to learn what, what they need to know, the best way to teach it so people actually learn it, and the best method (face-to-face course, online, job aid, training video or manual, etc.) to deliver the training. I’m like a learning architect in that I develop a design document (learning blueprint) that lays out the course. Then like a general contractor, I manage a team of instructional designers who use the blueprint or design document to develop the learning materials for the course.
